'Marie-Christine - Walk In Beauty (2011)

Sometimes the best way for an artist to stand out is to simplify. With a cognac-laced alto and a matter-of-fact vocal approach to song, the Canadian by way of Haiti soul pop singer debuts a mix of cover tunes and original material that pleases without working up a sweat. Taking on major cultural sign posts like Corey Hart’s classic line “I wear my sunglasses at night” on the reboot, “Girl in Shades,” an acoustic to soulful rock take on Prince’s oft-covered “I Wanna Be Your Lover,” and a rarely touched Stevie Wonder hit like “Keep on Running” (a version blessed by an appearance by Wonder himself),

Marie-Christine manages to make them her own with a sass and confidence that compels repeated listening, particularly on the synthy reggae-pop version of “Tempted” with fitting duet partner Golden Chyl. Gifted with a husky tone, perfect pitch, and a running believability, the limitations of her vocal range proves less an issue than expected, particularly on Anders Bagge’s (Madonna, Janet Jackson) organic production that compliments her pluck and blue notes.

From the neo-ragtime musicality of “Get Out” to the dark synth pop of “In Your Sweater,” the production remains consistently simple, unobtrusive, occasionally toe-tapping and pleasing to the ear. Lyrically penned and co-penned by Corey Hart, the originals all show up to swing and rarely miss. Incidentally, Marie-Christine is the first artist signed to the 80s Canadian pop-star’s label, Siena Records. Comparisons to Hilary Mwelwa of the UK’s Hil St. Soul may prove inevitable, but there’s something so neat and sure about Marie-Christine that you can’t help but see her as her own woman. We can’t wait to hear more.

Marie-Christine DePestre est une chanteuse montréalaise bien connue dans l’industrie musicale pour avoir été choriste pour de nombreux artistes et émissions télévisées, en plus d’avoir participé à des revues musicales.

Découverte par Corey Hart, chanteur montréalais populaire mondialement au milieu des années 1980, elle nous offre maintenant son premier album, Walk in Beauty, qui contient 6 chansons de Hart. Et quelle bonne façon de se présenter que de faire une version complètement nouvelle du plus grand succès de Corey Hart, « Sunglasses at Night ». La nouvelle mouture très dansante s’intitule « Girl in Shades » et ouvre l’album tout en énergie. On peut ensuite entendre l’excellente « Totally Random », une pièce pop ensoleillée à la mélodie inoubliable. Par la suite, les morceaux pop / R&B s’enchaînent à merveille grâce à la voix suave de Marie-Christine qui séduit rapidement ses auditeurs. Elle reprend le classique «Tempted » en compagnie de GoldenChyl, ainsi que « I Wanna Be Your Lover » de Prince. Elle est même accompagnée de Stevie Wonder sur la disco « Keep On Running ».

Marie-Christine est d’une grande polyvalence étant aussi efficace dans les pièces dansantes (« In Your Sweater ») que dans les moments soul plus intimistes (la chanson-titre) et les rythmes haïtiens, son pays d’origine (« Port au Prince » avec Luck Mervil). Malgré les variations de rythme tout au long du disque, Marie-Christine réussit le tour de force de bien ficeler les morceaux pour en faire un tout cohérent qui s’écoute bien jusqu’à la fin.

Voici donc un très bon premier album de la part d’une chanteuse de grand talent qu’il faudra surveiller de près, puisqu’elle pourrait fort bien aller battre les Américaines du genre sur leur propre terrain… (découverte du mois de juillet 2011 '
